PCI Security Standards Council (PCI SSC) hosts payment experts to discuss the present and future of payment security
SAO PAULO, 12 AUGUST 2021 – The Payment Card Industry (PCI) Security Standards Council (SSC) hosted its fifth annual Latin American Forum for payment security stakeholders and business leaders in Brazil and throughout Latin America this week, with the goal of increasing awareness about the critical role of developing strong security standards and best practices for payment data security.
“We simply must work together to advance payment security,” PCI Security Standards Council (PCI SSC) Associate Director, LA Region for Brazil, Carlos Caetano told attendees. “With the challenges triggered by the COVID-19 pandemic, an increase in cyber threats like malware and online skimming attacks, it is still vital, now more than ever, for the business community to be aware of strong security standards like those provide by PCI Standards and adopt smart security practices.” Mr. Caetano further highlighted the need for strong security standards to address emerging threats. “The dramatic rise in cloud migration throughout our region will be significant and will present new and fast changing payment security challenges.”
Regional and industry experts speaking at the event included representatives from the PCI SSC, Getnet, C6 Bank, Banco Safra, d-Local, Foregenix Ltd, LATAM Airlines, 1st Secure IT (dba GM Sectec), CSU Cardsystem S.A. Presentations and discussions addressed a mix of regional and global topics ranging from an update on the development of the PCI Data Security Standard (DSS) v4.0, the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic on global cyber threats, the increase significance of cloud security, cybersecurity trends in Latin America; and preventing malware an online skimming attacks.
Highlighting the PCI SSC’s 5-year anniversary of hosting the LAF, PCI SSC Executive Director Lance Johnson said, “The Latin America region has made tremendous advances in payment security with more and more companies in the region making cybersecurity a top priority. With the rapid growth in different forms of payments, now, more than ever, we must join forces to work together to improve payment security globally. It is very encouraging to see industry in Brazil and throughout the region working together to address the ever-expanding cyber threats from around the world.”
Key focus areas at the PCI SSC Latin American Forum:
Participation and engagement – numerous speakers spoke about opportunities for industry engagement with the PCI SSC including involvement as a Participating Organization (PO), Internal Assessor Trainings, and the upcoming nominations for the PCI SSC Regional Engagement Board. By working together, stakeholders can share information, gain additional knowledge and work to put in place strong security practices.
Threats – Malware and online skimming attacks are of major concern in Brazil and throughout Latin America. The PCI DSS and Software Security Framework (SSF) are tools that can help organizations protect against such threats. These topics were discussed by several forum speakers as a high priority.
Cloud Security – A panel of local experts discussed the importance to consider security for a cloud migration, especially supporting the great migration of e-commerce environments to the cloud for faster enablement.
